Last Friday the UA Library celebrated 100 years as a federal depository. I was involved in the planning of the event and it turned out wonderfully, with speakers including Arizona State Librarian Gladys Ann Wells, Congressman Raul Grijalva, UA President Robert Shelton, and UA Journalism Department Head Jacqueline Sharkey. They gave some inspiring words about the importance of public access to government information for a successful democracy.
As a federal depository, we receive all government publications and these are to be freely accessible to the public. A few years ago, we became the nation’s first virtual depository -increasing our ability to provide the public with this information by bringing it right to their desktops.
